Jury, the irritating part of being a music major

Along with every other final that they make you take as a music major, the most annoying and nerve racking for ANY first year has got to be the Jury.
What is this you might ask? Well, basically, all the professors in your concentration are in one room, you come in, sing/play one song of your choosing from the pieces you have worked on that semester, and then they pick one. Takes all of ten minutes but man do you ever have to worry about it like it was a final. You MUST pass in order to continue with your studies, and if one of the professors, just one, thinks it should not happen... Tough luck, and find a new major.
Okay... It's not THAT bad. But I got you going a little bit right? Oboe-Wan? You understand... Somewhat?... A smidgen?????
Anyway, at least this semester I know what to expect and how to prepare. Got my accompanist all set (just gotta remember to pay her), had the first of two small rehearsals (which went GREAT by the way), and am sitting here typing while I wait to go to a dance concert. (no swing in this one luuke)
Talk about emotional ups and downs. The jury is the least of my worries. In another year, junior standings!!!!! THAT is where panic REALLY sets in. But it is too much to think about right now, I will save that for a later date (say... A YEAR).

The Jury....that sounds very intimidating. I have enough trouble with oral examinations in French. Good luck!

I agree. And i know for a fact how hard french oral exams are. My last year in High school french was a equivalent to first year french in college, but not called an AP.

Best of skill to you, LLA1. In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

Trouble with French? That's why you should take German! Ach, solch eine leichte Sprache, und doch weniger Leute wollen sie lernen. Was gibt's denn damit?

Hi! I remember my juries fondly.... I went to Ithaca College - we had to pass our juries every semester on our major instrument (that's 8 semesters to you & me!) PLUS one "proficiency" exam midway through sophomore year. That Proficiency had to be a "pass" or else you are kindly asked to change majors. I never failed or "squeaked" by any juries. It wasn't my talent, they were all just won over by the old jedi mind trick!!

Anyway... I guess i got used to my juries especially as I got to know the applied faculty more.

I'm sure you have told me, what instrument do you play? You can also feel free to email me anytime!!

Have you seen my "real" website: http://www.geocities.com/lisasjenkins

good luck to you!! MTFBWY at your jury!!

I didn't try to play violin until about a year ago! It was fun, but my tender little fingers didn't take kindly to the pain involved. I played through the Suzuki 1 book last April, but that's not to say that I remember ANYTHING now!! LOL!!

I bet! My fingers have nice little hard pads from all 12 years of playing.
